Esplanade Park
Connaught Drive
Civic District Trail 1, Marker
6.
The
Esplanade was the focal point of sporting activities in Singapore
from the early days, thus it served to unite the people in physical
sports and other activities. This seafront promenade was further
inland then and the Esplanade stretched across the Padang. Esplanade
Park was built in 1943 on the Esplanade grounds.
Esplanade Park is located at Connaught Drive, opposite City Hall
and the Supreme Court.
In
1890, land around the Esplanade was reclaimed and enlarged, turning
it into a popular place for evening walks and social activities.
In 1953, as part of the Coronation Celebrations, the seafront promenade
was refurbished and renamed Queen Elizabeth Walk. The park was redeveloped
in 1991.
The Esplanade - Theatres
on the Bay, was recently built on a reclaimed land behind Esplanade
Park, and hence its name. The high-class state-of-the-art Theatres
on the Bay is Singapore's landmark location for arts and cultural
events, symbolising a new milestone in the arts scene of Singapore.
Esplanade Park is one of the oldest parks in Singapore. Many historical
landmarks were built in it, including the Lim
Bo Seng Memorial, the Cenotaph and
the Tan Kim Seng Fountain.
