MacDonald House
40, Orchard Road, Singapore 238837
Civic District Trail 2, Marker 14

         Introduction

The Europeans, Americans and Australians used this building. The terrorists attacks on this building, which had done much damage, remind us that we are always vulnerable. Being educated about the history of this tragedy, people are united in making sure such unfortunate incidents do not happen again.

         Background History

The MacDonald house was built in 1949 for the Hongkong and Shanghai Bangking Corporation, and was the first large building after the war. One of the first high-rise buildings in Orchard Road, it housed mainly British, American and Australian companies.

On 10 March 1965, a powerful bomb exploded on the mezzanine floor, near the lifts. The impact of the bomb killed three people, injured 33, shattered all windows within a 300 feet radius, and damaged cars outside the building.

This was one of many terrorist activities Singapore faced during the Indonesian Confrontation. This was triggered in 1943, when President Sukarno of Indonesia urged his people to oppose the formation of the Federation of Malaysia, consisting of Singapore, Malaya,Sabah and Sarawak. The two Indonesians responsible for the bombing were charged for murder and hanged.
