Aside from collecting and housing historical materials, National
Archives of Singapore also facilitates research and promotes public
interest in Singapore's heritage through exhibitions, publications
and websites. The landmark helps the people of all races to learn
more about and be educated in Singapore’s early years,
and this common knowledge helps to unite the Singaporeans
together.
National Archives of Singapore (NAS) was established in 1968 for
the collection, management and preservation of public and private
historical records, relating to the cultural heritage of Singapore.
These records are in various formats such as text, photograph, film,
video and audiotape. It contains more than 850, 000 photographs
of Singapore from the late 1800s to the present.
National
Archives of Singapore was first initiated by Dr F R J Verhoeven.
He was an UNESCO expert in archives administration and was assigned
to the National Library to survey the archives and records in Singapore
government departments and statutory boards. Before 1979, the NAS
was known as the National Archives and Records Centre (NARC).
The NAS is located in the building that was formerly occupied by
the Anglo-Chinese Primary School from 1886 to 1993. Today, what
was once the main school building is the home of the NAS. NAS was
first housed in the National Library. It was then moved to Fort
Canning in 1970 and to the Old Hill Street Police Station in 1980.
NAS moved into this permanent location in 1997.
The Singapore Philatelic Museum is located beside the National
Archives of Singapore. It exhibits the history of stamps and postage
in Singapore.
