Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is the only wetland in Singapore and is managed under The National Parks Board. It is located at the north-western end of Singapore. This 130 hectare reserve is made up of mangroves, mudflats, freshwater ponds and secondary forest. It is a suitable home to many varieties of flora and species of birds, including migratory birds that visit between the months of September to March every year.

The Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a popular place for schools, organisations and family groups to visit. It offers enriching and educational activities for both school students and members of the public. For educational context, SBWR is like a living "outdoor classroom" where subjects such as art, science, and conservation related topics can come alive for our children.

The area around SBWR was once the source of livelihood for prawn and fish farms. From the fact that mangroves are natural nursery grounds for young marine life, the farmers drew their provisions from the wetlands. In 1986, a group of avid bird watchers came across this 'ecological jewel'. The then Malayan Nature Society (Singapore Branch) wrote a proposal to the Ministry of National Development for to conserve this place. The development of Sungei Buloh Nature Park was undertaken by Parks and
Recreation Department, with Wildlife and Wetlands Trust as our consultants.

In 1993, PM Goh Chok Tong official opened Sungei Buloh as a nature park. SBNP was set up with the objectives of education, conservation, research and recreation. On 10th November 2001, the Park was conferred the status by Minister of National Development, Mr Mah Bow Tan. Sungei Buloh Nature Park was changed to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.

To reach out to the public, there are a host of different activities carried out. Being a wildlife hotspot, there are guided tours by birdwatches who play their part there by being volunteer guides. Interpretive displays can be found at the visitor center, showcasing the huge diversity of butterflies and insects found there. A reading corner can also be found at the visitor center, also known as The Cove. Here, you can read up more about the animals and plants in the Wetland Reserve. A more traditional aspect is showcased on Saturdays too, where there are demonstrations on the farming of prawns, thus visitors would be able to learn a bit about the life of the people who used to live there.

Talks are also held every month to students, and there are workshops organised for teachers, so this would aid in educating students and teachers about the conservation efforts, and how they can help. Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve is consistently carrying out a series of outreach programmes that involves school children, increasing their awareness of nature conservation and what's left of our natural heritage. Through school's involvement of CIP carried out at our premises, students are given the chance to participate in our conservation activities such as coastal clean up and mangrove planting.

In terms of educating the public, there are different methods consisting of collaborated research with tertiary institutions, school talks, teachers' workshops, and other outreach programmes such as Young Naturalist Passport (YNP) Camp.
