Basically a wiki is plainly just a website that provides privileges for visitors to edit or alter any content usually without having the need to be registered. Such conveniences of interaction can make the website into a collation of information that many people might have contributed to. Such websites include the free encyclopedia, Wikipedia and WikiWikiWeb.

WikiWikiWeb

WikiWikiWeb is the first ever wiki written using Perl. It contains different topics and various discussions including debates that are totally about software engineering. This wiki was the first to be created and was developed by Ward Cunningham in 1994.

Review

Wikis are very effective; it is something like collaborative writing that brings the community together to create a website. A wiki is an effective tool for mass collaborate writing. With wikis like Wikipedia, finding information now has been a step easier.

When using a wiki, one will find many advantages to it. For example, minimal training is needed for most of them have a search button and access to articles is free and easy. It is also useful for collaborative writing and can help to create a certain relationship of sharing and working as a team. Most importantly there is no hassle, no need to install anything to authorize HTML.

But there are still disadvantages of a wiki. A wiki might suffer from a lack of a strong leadership as most of them plainly collaborate their writings together. When there is a lack of consensus, the wiki becomes ineffective. When people collaborate their writings together, they might have infringed the copyright law or other legal issuses regarding collaborative content. When gaining momentum a wiki might be at a disadvantaged because it is difficult for them to do so.
